William S. Johnston, 88, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, August 21, 2016, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.
The son of Stanley E. and Josephine B. (Jeffries) Johnston, he was born May 23, 1928 in White Township, PA.
Bill was a member of the Indiana-Franklin Masonic Lodge #313 and a past Master. He was also a lifetime member of the Indiana Fire Association and an active service member for 33 years, a lifetime member of VFW Post 1989, a member of the Indiana American Legion as well as a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.
Bill was most content while at his favorite place, “the cabin,” where he spent long hours working on projects and watching the deer feed in the field. In his spare time, he created beautiful furniture and restored antique clocks. Family was very important to Bill. His children had the most wonderful back yard with playground equipment he designed and built himself.
Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Nioma (Steetle) Johnston whom he wed on November 22, 1952; children, Michele J. Johnston, Indiana, Patrice J. Johnston, Homer City, John J. Johnston and wife, Debbie, Home, Dr. Lisa J. O’Hara, Port Matilda, PA, and Jeffery J. Johnston and wife, Romona, Capon Bridge, WV; four grandchildren, Jennifer Visneski and husband Jay, Indiana, Joshua William Overdorff, Homer City, and Kayla and Krista Johnston, WV; great-grandchildren, Lauren Visneski and Jordan Morrison; sister, Betty Jean Davis, Indiana; and a niece, Susan J. Davis, Provincetown, MA.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William S. Johnston, Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Jillian JoLynn Overdorff.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the John A. Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana. An additional hour of visitation will be held on Friday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. with funeral service immediately following with Pastor Dennis Marshall officiating. Interment in the Oakland Cemetery will be private.
