Eleanor Gallati Obituary

Eleanor M. Gallati, 92, passed away on 4/19/25, at St. Andrew's Village.

She was born in Coraopolis, PA, on September 8, 1932, the daughter of Moses and Caroline Mihalyi.

As a first generation American, she was always proud of her Hungarian heritage and her ability to speak the language fluently.

Eleanor was a 1950 graduate of Coraopolis High School and a 1954 graduate of Indiana State Teacher's College. She taught Home Economics at Leetsdale High School (Quaker Valley HS) for three years, and earned her Master's degree at Penn State during the summers.

In 1957 she was asked to return to ISTC (IUP) and accepted a position to teach Methods of Teaching in the Home Economics department.

It was there she met another first year faculty member, Walter Gallati. They married in August, 1958.

During the last half of a seven year maternity leave from 1960 to 1967, Eleanor was asked to serve as an Indiana County Extension Home Economist, which she accepted on a half time basis. She enjoyed the experience very much.

Eleanor and Walter traveled extensively with their children during the summers, and throughout their years in retirement. The only continent they didn’t visit was Antarctica as Walter didn’t like cold weather!

Eleanor volunteered at Indiana Regional Medical Center during retirement, and she and Walter delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years.

In addition to her parents and husband, Eleanor was preceded in death by her two brothers, William and Edward Mihalyi, and one sister, Margit Kupas.

She is survived by her daughter, Carla (William) Dorsey, Portland, OR, her son Walter David (Karen) Gallati, Cumberland, ME, four grandchildren, Crispin, Gage, Mika, Clementine, one sister, Alice Mihalyi, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special Indiana family, the Matthew Conjelko family.

Eleanor has donated her body to science via the Humanity Gifts Registry. Memorial donations may be made to Indiana Co. Habitat for Humanity.
