Carl Albert Utberg, 103, of Indiana (formerly of Dixonville) passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2024, while at St. Andrews Village.
The son of Edward and Anna (Sword) Utberg, he was born June 23, 1920, in Claghorn, PA.
Carl was a 1930 graduate of Green Township High School and was a skilled baseball player who had played short stop. Upon graduation, Carl spent 40+ years working in the coal mines. At one point, Carl enlisted into the US Navy and served as a chef and anti-aircraft gunner aboard the LSM 243. He served in many areas of the Pacific before his discharge. Over time, he became a Land Inspector, Mine Superintendent, and State Mine Inspector.
Carl had attended St. Francis College and was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, UMWA Post 0488, AARP, Gideons International, Charter Member of WWII Memorial, and American Legion Post 222.
Surviving is his sister, Helen (Don) Goodlin, Bessemer, PA and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife Betty M (Cassidy) Utberg; brothers, Frank, George, and Henry; sisters, Lena Hullenbaugh, Ellen Barr, Evelyn Felichko, Gertrude Raymond, and Hilda Swab.
Friends will be received on Friday from 12 pm to 2 pm at the John A Lefdahl Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow in the Lefdahl Chapel with Rev. Micah McMillen officiating.
Interment in the Oakland Cemetery will be private.
