F. Daniel Harshman, 75, Indiana, PA, passed away at his residence, Tuesday, November 22, 2016.

The son of Freeman James and Mary Elizabeth (Molnar), he was born June 29, 1941, in Scottdale, PA.

Dan graduated from Scottdale High School in 1959 and from Indiana State Teachers College (IUP) with a degree in Social Studies.

He married Margaret Ann Gendek, with whom he had four children. Dan was employed as an educator at Purchase Line and Marion Center High Schools, and he also taught in Parma, Ohio. In his later years, he was employed by Season-All Industries and IUP.

Dan was instrumental in establishing the first Tee Ball program at Indiana's YMCA. He loved to play, to coach, and to watch sports of all kinds. Dan enjoyed discussing sports with his colleagues and was known to never miss watching the Steelers. He also was a devoted follower of Pitt basketball and football.

When Dan became a widow, he met his significant other, Connie Ober. As a couple, they enjoyed vacationing for eight years at their special vacation destination, Siesta Key. Dan loved to sit on the lanai and watch the diamonds sparkle on the gulf and to observe the activity on the gulf's sandy white beach.

A hard worker who also was indeed a "gentle" man, Dan will be remembered as a kind person who went the extra mile to help others. He enjoyed taking photographs of his family, cooking his special batches of chili and vegetable soup, reading multiple newspapers daily, and eating at Valley Dairy.

Surviving is his love, Connie Ober and beloved children, Danielle (Harshman) Muller and husband, James, of Forest, VA; Scott Harshman and wife, Kim, of Jeannette, PA; Denise Harshman Wells of Sheperdstown, WV; and Shaun Harshman of Indiana, PA. He is also survived by his three precious grandchildren, Powers Muller of Forest, and Nathan and Lucas Harshman of Jeannette; dear sister, Karen McFadden and husband, Doug, of Harleysville, PA; a cherished aunt, Kay Molnar, of Scottdale, PA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Preceding Dan in death were his parents and wife, Margaret.

Friends will be received at the John Lefdahl Funeral Home, Indiana, this Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. An additional viewing will be held Sunday from 10 to 11 a.m. with funeral service at 11 a.m. in the Lefdahl Chapel. Pastor Tom Spiker will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to Indiana VNA and to the Indiana VNA Hospice for their love, care and guidance they provided Dan and his family, especially to staff members, Nikki, Jeanne, Amy, Andy and Pastor Tom. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice, 850 Hospital Road, Suite 3000, Indiana, PA 15701.
